Law firm launches political law practice

On Long Island, a law firm started a political law practice.

Partners in the Harris Beach Long Island office say the firm’s new practice focuses on election law, campaign finance and lobbying compliance.

Two of the firm’s partners, Keith Corbett and Jared Kasschau, co-lead the firm’s group, whose lawyers have long represented candidates, corporations, governments, political committees, trade associations and other individuals and organizations seeking to run for office or shape government policy.

“Given the current political environment, it is essential that participants in the electoral process obtain experienced advice to ensure compliance with the myriad regulations governing elections and politics,” Corbett said in a statement. “Non-compliance creates reputational risk, impacts campaign performance and could also lead to legal liability.”

“We can quickly assemble an integrated team with experience across sectors to help mitigate risk and navigate political processes, campaigns, elections, ballot initiatives, political advocacy, campaign finance, lobbying, ethics and more at the federal, state and local level,” Kasschau said in a statement.

Team attorneys have advised mayors, commissioners, council members, superintendents, administrators, governors, congressional representatives and two former presidential candidates.

Corbett’s expertise spans all aspects of election law, having litigated hundreds of ballot access proceedings in New York State while advising constituted committees. He is also a campaign finance attorney and regularly represents candidates, trade associations, political action committees and all entities engaged in campaign finance related activities in state, federal and provincial politics. new York City. He has represented President Barack Obama in a “birth” case, advised President Joseph R. Biden’s presidential campaign, and regularly advised the last three governors of New York State.

Kasschau served as the Nassau County District Attorney from 2017 to 2020. He has extensive experience in all aspects of municipal law, with a particular focus on New York State election law and campaign finance. He has represented candidates for federal, state and local office, including candidates for the presidency of the United States, and advised candidates at every stage of the electoral process, from ballot access to post-election recounts.

Kasschau also has extensive campaign finance experience, regularly advising and advising candidates, candidate committees and other political committees on registration, filing requirements, liquidation, audits and investigations. . As a municipal attorney, he counseled and counseled municipalities and special districts on election and referendum proceedings, as well as actions brought by candidates or voters.

Harris Beach attorneys routinely assist in the administration of local, state, and federal elections, including intervening and defending various election law proceedings under New York State Elections Law.
